Colchester Castle is a Norman castle dating from the second half of the 11th century, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which makes its keep the largest of its kind in Europe. It has housed Colchester Museum, with an important Roman collection, since 1860, and is a scheduled monument and Grade I listed building.

Easton Lodge was a Victorian Gothic stately home near Little Easton, Essex, noted for weekend gatherings attended by the Prince of Wales, before being largely destroyed in the 20th century. Part of the west wing still stands, and the Grade II listed gardens designed by Harold Peto are under restoration and open to the public.

Hedingham Castle in Essex is regarded as the best preserved Norman keep in England, with a keep from around 1140 built on fortifications dating to about 1100. The keep, the only major medieval structure to survive besides two turrets, is a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument, and is open to the public.
